What are the options for treatment?
The options can be as diverse as the causes. Treatment can range from over the counter medications to nerve block injections. There is no single technique that guarantees 100% pain relief. Relief may be found by using a combination of treatment options.
Medication Therapy: Prescriptions and Non-prescription
Less severe forms of pain may be relieved by over the counter medications such as Tylenol or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen. Both Tylenol and NSAID’s relieve pain causes by muscle aches and stiffness. NSAID’s also reduce inflammation, swelling, and irritation. Topical pain relievers are also an option and they can be applied to the skin to relieve pain and inflammation from sore muscles and arthritis.
If over the counter medications do not provide relief, your doctor may prescribe stronger medications, such as muscle relaxers, prescription NSAID’s such as Celebrex or a course of stronger pain medications. A limited number of steroid injections at the site of a joint problem can reduce swelling and inflammation. Nerve Blocks may be given for back pain that is determined to be from a facet joint.
Back Bracing
A lumbar brace can provide external support to limit the range of motion of vertebrae. You can compare this to having a cast on a broken wrist. The rigid style of a back brace limits motion, which may reduce your pain.
Trigger Point Injections
Trigger points are a knot of muscle that forms when muscles do not relax. Trigger point injections can be used to treat these painful areas. The provider will inject a local anesthetic and sometimes may include a steroid into the trigger point. This injection may alleviate the pain. Usually a series of these will produce most pain relief. These an be used for pain in the arms, legs, low back, and neck. They have been shown to relief fibromyalgia, tension headaches, and muscle pain.
Joint Injections
You may be experiencing pain in your joints: shoulder, knee, hip. This is often from Osteoarthritis. Symptoms of Osteoarthritis often include: Joint Stiffness, Sore to the touch, Swelling. This type pain may be alleviated with a Cortisone injection into the painful joint. They offer quick relief from your joint pain. The benefits from these injections can last months.
Nerve Blocks
Sometimes a group of nerves can cause pain to a specific body area can be blocked with medication injection into a specific part of the body. The injection of nerve-numbing substance is called a nerve block. There are different kinds of Nerve Blocks:
*Therapeutic Nerve Block can be use to help control acute pain (injury) by the injection of a local anestheic
*Diagnostic Nerve Block can be used to determine the exact source of your pain. These contain an anesthetic that will a short period of relief. One of these type blocks is a “Facet Joint Block: and it is performed to determine if the facet joint is the source of your pain. Facet joints ae located on the back of the spine and slightly overlap each other. They guide and restrict the spine movement. If this procedure indicates that the facet is causing your pain, this would indicate your next procedure would be “Radiofrequency Ablation.”
*Radiofrequency Ablation/RFA: Radiofrequency Ablation uses radio waves to put a small area of nerves “to sleep.” Its very low hat that stops the painful nerve from sending signals to your brain. RFA can provide lost lasting relief for people with chronic pain, especially in the low back and neck.
Spinal Cord Stimulation Implants
This is especially effective for back and limb pain. The small device will send signals to the spinal cord or to nerves to block pain signals from going to the brain.
